Jockey Club TourHeart+

An online self-help mental health platform for everyone

The Jockey Club TourHeart+ (JCTH+) Project was established in 2017 and revamped in 2021 to promote the belief that mental health is a fundamental right, not a condition to be stigmatized.

The project’s stepped care approach involves conducting a mental health assessment to identify and provide appropriate services to individuals. Led by Professor Winnie Mak of the Psychology Department at CUHK, along with a team of clinical psychologists and psychology-trained members, and sponsored by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the JCTH+ project aims to offer an evidence-based, personalized online self-help platform for working adults. In addition to the online platform, the project also provides other forms of support, including events, seminars, webinars, and offline professional assistance.

The Jockey Club TourHeart+ logo features a heart and mountain shape to symbolize a journey to the heart. It can be used as a whole, by its wordmark, or by its heart shape alone, depending on the context. The JCTH+ heart shape in the logo can also serve as a graphic element to enhance brand recognition. The JCTH+ voice is knowledgeable, accessible, clever, and witty, with a compassionate and uplifting core.

A key feature of the JCTH+ platform is its bilingual virtual companion, Boon, who provides guidance on various mental health topics to promote overall well-being. The platform is specifically designed for the workforce in Hong Kong and offers corporate packages tailored to meet the needs of companies.

Our team's role in realizing the project involves creating the brand identity and character design for the platform. We designed Boon as a smart and adaptable character who can transform into different sizes, forms, and shapes, and programmed an extensive database of psychological information that is readily available to users. Boon's empathetic and caring nature is reflected in its design, with a calming lagoon color that conveys serenity and a cantaloupe color that represents vitality, energy, imagination, and self-confidence.

The platform's user interface (UI) design was based on research conducted by CUHK's UX team and user feedback, and is available on both the website and mobile app (TourHeart+). The bilingual platform includes a wide range of chatbot topics communicated by Boon, along with courses focusing on mindfulness and insomnia, and periodic online articles. To enhance user understanding, over 200 illustrations and animations were created to visually illustrate complex concepts in a welcoming and inviting manner.
