A DOUBLE LISTEN: Yama no Oto
Crafting a Visual Tapestry for a Sound-based Exhibition
The HK House at Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is an initiative launched by the Art Promotion Office in Japan, aimed at creating a platform for residency, cultural exchange, and showcasing art.
As part of this year's event, Toolbox Percussion, an art group from Hong Kong, curated a sound-based art exhibition called A DOUBLE LISTEN: Yama no Oto.
For the exhibition, we developed the overall design concept and applied it to various digital and print formats. Our scope of work included creating the exhibition's key visual, designing flyers, outdoor banners, wall panels, captions and signage, producing the exhibition pamphlet, as well as developing online and printed promotional materials.
As part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Hong Kong House is a gallery and artist residence aims to facilitate cultural exchange between Hong Kong artists and local residents. Located at the periphery of Tsunan Town in Niigata Prefecture, Hong Kong House fills up the north corner of a pocket garden in a peaceful neighborhood.
The design concept of the key visual draws inspiration from several keywords, including nature, percussion, human touch, and dynamics. The key visual features four distinct color palettes: blue, green, purple, and brown, symbolizing the sky, mountain, water, and earth respectively. (天、山、水、地).
The circular shapes in the key visual's design represent percussion hits, rhythm, or the form of a drum when viewed from above.
This adaptable identity system is easily identifiable and compatible with images. It also lends itself well to different printing materials.
The incorporation of circles aligns beautifully with the imagery of Echigo Tsumari and adds a captivating visual element to the exhibition.
